The NeXGen system is the latest step in Microsoft’s quest to make the company’s cloud computing business more appealing to customers.
Microsoft says it has sold more than 15 million NeX gen systems in the last two years.
NeX Gen was one of several new technologies Microsoft announced Thursday.
Among the new products are cloud computing services, security and other cloud-related services, including the ability to store a password on a NeX server, and more.
For example, Microsoft says, it has “dramatically improved the way we handle cloud access in our Office 365 cloud.”
NeX is the name of the company that owns the NeX computer.
But some analysts have questioned whether the new technology could help Microsoft become more attractive to customers who don’t own a NeXT computer.
Microsoft’s cloud business isn’t doing so well, they say, and the company has yet to make its next big move to gain customers.
But, they point out, it’s also not clear if NeX can actually make it a profitable business.
That could be a problem, given the company doesn’t yet have a clear path to becoming a $5 billion a year enterprise.
Microsoft is also working on an app store called Azure, which could be another way to build a competitive cloud computing ecosystem.
But for now, Microsoft appears to be betting on its new cloud computing offerings.
“We’re not going to build it as a software company,” CEO Satya Nadella said at a conference Thursday.
“It’s not like we’re going to launch the software, it will be built as a cloud platform.
That’s a really important distinction.”
